"CITY STREETS"
THE PHOTOGRAPHY
The first photograph was “Going Home.” It was taken from the northeast corner of Congress and Wabash , facing north. I remember the scene vividly. What struck me was the absolute, dead silence. It was 4:30 PM that Saturday afternoon. The only evidence of life was the family – there was a total sense of their isolation, with me the singular observer.
Suddenly, the “El” broke the bend, automobiles re-appeared, taxis blew their horns again and the city jumped back to life.
THE PROJECT
In September of 2003, I conceived the project: to come back, again and again and capture the life of the city, the constant hustle, Brownstones, people on the go…always people on the go.
My objective is to photograph portraits of Chicago and its people– the essence of its soul. Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, a city always with people on the move with a purpose and with no purpose.
There are endless themes in the city and of its people – men & women entering and exiting shops, an African-American boy absorbing the day, a homeless person on State Street, people in line for the theater, a waiter in action, individuals on streets finishing or pursuing a task.
Emotions on faces can be seen on any given day and at any given time – feelings of emptiness, dynamic frenzy, anger, sadness, happiness, disappointment, need, satisfaction, wonder, fear, bewilderment and fulfillment.
Each photograph is a moment of an individual story, experienced by each of us.
